How much does a £500 loan cost overall?

The total you repay depends on the term of your loan. Before you agree to borrow, we’ll show you the total amount repayable in full.

How pricing works

In the UK, loans are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). That means:

  • Interest is capped at 0.8% per day – we only charge 0.79%
  • Default fees are capped
  • You’ll never repay more than 100% of the amount borrowed

So the cost is limited – and it can’t keep increasing.

When a £500 loan might be helpful

A £500 loan may be suitable when you need to pay for something that can’t be delayed until payday.

Short-term loans are meant for occasional, short-term borrowing.

Before applying, it’s important to make sure the repayments would fit comfortably alongside your other monthly commitments.

Is a £500 loan right for you?

For some people, borrowing £500 through a loan can be a manageable way to cover an urgent short-term expense. For others, it may not be the right option.

Here are some situations where a short-term loan may or may not be suitable:

✔ It may be suitable if…✘ It may not be appropriate if…
✔ You have a one-off urgent cost✘ You’re struggling with ongoing debt
✔ You have a regular income✘ You’re borrowing to repay other debts
✔ You don’t need to borrow long-term✘ You need longer-term financial support
✔ You can comfortably make the repayments on time and in full✘ You’re unsure if you can meet the repayment schedule

Short-term credit should be used carefully. Take a moment to review your budget and ensure repayments fit your monthly outgoings.

Looking to borrow a different amount?

£500 isn’t the right amount for every situation. Borrowing only what you need can help you stay in control of your finances.

Moneyboat offers a range of short-term loan amounts, so you can apply for an amount that better matches the cost you need to cover.

If you think £500 may not be suitable, you could consider:

Please note: New customers may be able to borrow between £200 and £800. Returning customers may be able to borrow up to £1,500, subject to affordability checks.

Eligibility for a loan

To apply for a loan with Moneyboat, you’ll need to:

✔  Be 18 or over

✔  Live in the UK

✔  Have a regular source of income

✔  Have a UK bank account in your name

If you decide to submit a loan application, we’ll also carry out a full credit check and affordability assessment. This includes looking at your income, regular outgoings, and current financial commitments to decide whether the loan would be affordable.

Meeting the basic criteria does not guarantee approval.

Representative Example: Borrow £400 for 4 months: 3 monthly repayments of £156.09 followed by a final repayment of £156.07. Total repayment £624.34. Interest rate p.a. (fixed) 288.35%. Representative 1,267.9% APR.

Applying for a £500 loan with poor credit history

Even if you think you’ve got a bad credit score, you’re still welcome to apply for a short-term loan from Moneyboat.

When we assess your application, we consider your current financial circumstances and credit record. That includes your income, your usual outgoings, and whether the repayments appear manageable.

Approval isn’t guaranteed. We’ll only offer a loan if we believe it’s affordable for you.

Read our minimum lending requirements for more information.

Credit checks & responsible lending

As a regulated UK lender, we’re required to check that borrowing is suitable and manageable.

If we don’t think a loan would be affordable, we may decline the application. That’s to help protect you from taking on debt that could cause problems later.

If you’re already under financial pressure or thinking about borrowing to repay other debts, it may be worth exploring other options first.

If you’re unsure, free and independent guidance is available at moneyhelper.org.uk. You can also see a full list of free and independent support organisations here.

    Alternatives to a £500 loan

Before taking out a loan, it’s worth considering other options:

    • Using savings, if you have them
    • Asking your employer about a salary advance
    • Setting up a payment plan with a utility provider
    • Checking whether you’re eligible for a support scheme

Short-term loans are intended for temporary borrowing rather than ongoing financial issues. If you’re experiencing long-term financial pressures, considering support options first may be helpful.

Before we approve a loan, we check that the repayments look affordable for you.

We review your income, essential outgoings and any existing commitments. If we don’t think the loan would be manageable, we may decline the application. That’s to help protect you from taking on debt that could cause problems later.

There are several reasons why an application may not be approved, including:

    • Affordability concerns
    • Insufficient or irregular income
    • Existing financial commitments
    • Incomplete or incorrect information
    • Credit history factors

If we decline an application, it’s because we believe the loan may not be suitable or affordable based on the information available to us.

Yes. Applying for a loan involves a credit check, and your repayment history may be reported to credit reference agencies.

Paying on time may help your credit file, while missed payments may have a negative impact.

A £500 loan may be worth considering if you need short-term support with a smaller urgent cost and are confident the repayments would fit your budget.

If you’re already dealing with debt problems or ongoing financial pressure, it may be better to get independent advice before applying.

You may still be able to apply if you receive benefits, as long as you are in employment and your overall income is enough to cover the repayments and meet your other essential costs.

All applications are assessed individually, based on affordability criteria, including your income and essential monthly outgoings.

Check our minimum lending requirements for more information.

No. A regulated lender cannot guarantee approval. Every application must be assessed for affordability and suitability.

Yes. You have the right to withdraw from your loan agreement within 14 days of signing.

If you do, you’ll need to repay the amount borrowed plus any interest that accrued while the loan was outstanding.

If you’re worried about making a repayment, it’s important to contact us as soon as possible.

We’ll work with you to understand your situation and discuss possible options. Missing payments can affect your credit file and may result in additional charges, subject to FCA limits.

Late repayment can cause you serious money problems. For help, go to moneyhelper.org.uk.

Most applications can be completed online without uploading paperwork straight away.

If asked, you’ll typically need to provide:

    • Your personal details (name, address and contact information)
    • Details of your income and employment

In some cases, we may ask for additional information to verify your identity or confirm your income. This could include photo ID or recent bank statements, depending on your circumstances.
